  • Do I need a special licence to drive the car?

    A current and full motor vehicle driver’s licence is required and must be produced upon vehicle collection. Should a foreign licence be in a language other than English, it must be accompanied by an accredited English translation. The translation must be provided by a NZ Transport Agency authorised translation service or a diplomatic representative at a high commission, embassy or consulate, or the authority that issued your overseas licence (an International Driving Permit may be acceptable as a translation if in English).

  • How old do I need to be to drive the car?

    Pick ups between 01 April 2015 & 31 March 2016

    Drivers must be 21 years of age or over for Economy, Compact, Intermediate, Standard, Intermediate AWD SUV, and Standard AWD SUV.
    Drivers must be 25 years of age or over for Full Size, Full Size Wagon, Large 4WD, Premium 4WD, Premium 8 Seater and Intermediate 12 Seater.

    Minimum age required for Full Size car is now 21 years

  • What is the minimum rental duration?

    ​For pick ups from 01 April 2015 to 31 March 2016


    Minimum rental period is two days for same island rentals. Minimum rental period is six days for North to South Island rentals (and vice versa) with minimum rental length of three days in each island. Please note that for North to South Island rentals (and vice versa) the vehicle cannot be taken on the ferry.

    Minimum rental periods apply to one-way rentals.

    Rental days are calculated on a 24 hour basis.

    Please note that minimum rental period is subject to change during peak periods.

    For pick ups from 01 April 2016 to 31 March 2017

    Minimum rental period is one day for same island rentals.


  • Can I pick up the car in one city and drop it off in another?

    Yes you can. A one-way fee will apply on certain routes. Rentals of five days or more will not be subject to the one-way fee. One-way rentals are available within the island that the vehicle is collected. Vehicles are not permitted to travel from one island to another.

  • Can I pick up and drop off a Britz Rental Car at the airport?

    Yes you can. Check out our locations for information on our airport branches.

  • Do I have to pay for more than one driver?

    No you don’t.

  • What happens if I cancel my booking?

    There are no cancellation fees for your Britz rental car. A non-refundable 2.2% administration fee will apply to all credit card transactions. There are no other cancellation fees for your Britz rental car.

  • What Credit Cards do you accept?

    We accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

    A non-refundable 2.2% administration fee will apply to all credit card transactions.

  • Do you have any vehicles with automatic transmission?

    All of our cars have automatic transmission, with the exception of the Economy Car which is manual.

  • Can a baby seat be fitted?

    Child seats (approximate age birth – 3 years) and Booster seats (approximate age 4+ years) can be fitted on the rear seats of all Britz Cars.

    Whist it is legal for children travelling in child restraints to sit in the front passenger seat, Britz recommend all restraints are fitted to the rear seats of the vehicle for safety. A Child seat cannot be placed rear facing in the front passenger seat if there is a front passenger airbag.

    Britz offers child and booster seats for hire if you need one. For specific details about where your child will sit during travel, please ask your consultant.

  • Are there restrictions on where I can drive the Britz?

    Cars can only be driven on sealed roads.

    No vehicle shall be driven on the following roads:
    Skippers Road (Queenstown)
    Ninety Mile Beach (Northland)
    Ball Hut Road (Mt. Cook)

    All roads north of Colville (Coromandel Peninsula), the Tapu to Coroglen road (all parts east of Rapaura Gardens), the 309 road from Coromandel to Kairnarama and the Blackjack Road from Kuatuna to Opito.

    On the following Highways in the South Island between the hours of 2000 and 0600 hours (local time) from 1 June to 31 October:

    • State Highway 6 between Twizel and Queenstown
    • The Milford road between Te Anau and Milford Sound
    • The West Coast road between Franz Josef and Wanaka
    • Arthur's Pass


    Britz reserves the right at its sole discretion to restrict vehicle movements in certain areas due to adverse road or weather conditions.

  • ​Can I pick-up and drop-off outside of branch opening times?

    No, after hours vehicle collection and return is not available. Vehicles must be collected and returned within business hours.

  • Do you have any Vehicle Assistance while I am on the road?

    Yes, we do. Free roadside assistance is provided for inherent mechanical faults in the vehicle but fees and charges apply for all other faults or driver induced errors. Generally these fees and charges range from NZ$45 plus GST to NZ$600 plus GST and apply to faults and driver induced errors such as:

    1.     A flat battery;
    2.     Lost keys, a keyless start or remote control device;
    3.     Unlocking the vehicle when the key, keyless start or remote control device have been locked in it; or
    4.     Changing a wheel as the result of a flat tyre

    Any problems associated with the vehicle, including equipment failure, must be reported to Britz as soon as possible, and within 24 hours in order to give Britz the opportunity to rectify the problem during the rental. Failure to do so will compromise any claims for compensation. Britz does not accept liability for any claims submitted after this period.
