This week is an exciting week for those of us at Britz HQ. With stars in our eyes we watched on as Breakfast Sam embarked on an epic west coast adventure in a Britz Campervan.
Unfortunately, the weather didn't play nice and the guys on the road ended up looking bedraggled by lunchtime most days.
We'd probably advise doing this road trip on a sunnier week than our friends at TVNZ, so we thought we'd share the love and let you in on some of the fun activities they got up to and inspire you to take your own west coast trip.
Grab a Ferg-burger, head down to the lake front and soak in the view. Walk off your over indulgence by going for a walk or bike ride along one of the lakes popular walkways or get your blood pumping with something a little more adventurous. Spend the evening watching the stars from high above Queenstown, surrounded by snow-capped mountains with the skyline star gazing tour.
Heading to the stunning Fox Glacier from Queenstown, you'll pass through Wanaka which is a great place to stop and stock up your camper with supplies and check out #thatWanakaTree. On the way to the Glacier you'll pass through the picturesque Haast Pass, a spectacular gorge with the longest one way bridge in New Zealand. A solid 4.5hours of driving through some of New Zealand's most beautiful natural wonders.
After you've spent the morning exploring the glacier, you'll want to head north towards Hokitika. Stop and enjoy a picnic lunch and a photo opportunity at Lake Matheson, where you can absorb in some of the best views of Mount Cook/Aoraki. Ease away the day at the glacier hot pools and then spend the night at the Hokitika Top 10 holiday park. Enjoy a glass of wine and a relaxing night at the camp grounds.
Spend the morning walking along one of the many walking tracks around Hokitika. You'll have trouble picking just one with the famous Tartare Track and Lake Mahinapua providing several to choose from. Perhaps hitting the waterways for a tour of Lake Mapourika is more to your taste where you can explore a kiwi sanctuary and 900 year old Kahikatea. The afternoon will be filled with exploring the exhilarating treetop walk, Hokitika Gorge or do something completely different and give glass blowing a try. After a busy day exploring, drive 90 minutes to Punakaiki stopping in Greymouth for a delicious meal.
A big day of driving from Punakaiki to Christchurch is on the horizon so have a big breakfast and hit the road early so you can make lots of stops along the way. Check out ancient limestone cliffs at the Paparoa National Park, go for a walk around the world famous pancake rocks. Upon arriving in Christchurch and dropping off your camper, be sure to take in some of New Zealand's infamous natural disaster history at the Cardboard Cathedral.
No matter the weather, your bound to stay warm, dry and cozy if you do this trip in a campervan.
