Spring into cycling and beat the summer crowds!
Spring is here, and it's the perfect season to start exploring New Zealand by bike. With extended daylight hours and warmer weather, you won't want to be cooped up inside anyway.
You might be looking for ways to beat the school holiday crowds, going away in spring allows you the freedom to ramble along at your own pace and really take in the scenery, stopping to take a photo or two, enjoy your picnic lunch and some quality time with your cycling buddy.
New Zealand has 23 great cycle trails to enjoy, but don't feel restricted to using just those trails, you'll be surprised by just how many places you can take your bike. Here's 5 of our favourite places to explore this spring:
Waikato River Trail
Experience the Waikato at its best and really connect with the environment around you. With exotic forest, wetlands, historic landmarks, intriguing volcanic rock formations and expansive lake and river views you are in for a real treat along this trail. With a mix of tracks for varying abilities, you'll be left feeling like 100kms is not quite enough.
Hauraki Rail Trail
One of the easiest of the national cycle trails the Hauraki Rail Trail weaves its way through magnificent landscapes between Thames, Paeroa, Te Aroha and Waihi. Pick and choose the parts of the track you want to do, but whatever you do, don't miss the Karangahake Gorge, where you even get to explore an old railway tunnel.
Hawkes Bay Trails
Meander along 180kms of flat track between Hastings and Napier. With three distinct experiences on offer you can enjoy cycling amongst the wineries, along the waterfront or through startling landscapes. For those who love local wildlife, the landscape ride will see you journey past the largest mainland gannet colony in the world.
West Coast Wilderness Trail
Carved along the Southern Alps on tracks made by pioneering gold rush miners, this gentle and family friendly trail follows flat. Spectacular outlooks of dense rainforest, glacial rivers, lakes and wetlands, as well as the snow-capped Southern Alps and the Tasman Sea makes this a truly unforgettable bike ride!
Otago Rail Trail
The first of New Zealand's great rides, this historical trail weaves its way through 20 different townships. Giving you the freedom to decide where to explore. This trail provides multiple opportunities to make detours through different towns, international curling rings and old abandoned gold diggings.
