Nestled in the foothills of the Waikato peninsula, on the North Islands West Coast, is the beachside town of Raglan. Only a two to three hour drive from Auckland, Raglan is the perfect place to kick-start your next campervan holiday. Pick up some supplies from Huntly on the way, or drive all the way to Raglan and stock up at many of the local food markets in the area.
Famous for its epic surf beaches, alternative lifestyle and artistic flare, Raglan promises a sun-worshippers dream holiday. Summer, Winter, Autumn, Spring - no matter the season, Raglan promises jaw dropping views and epic beaches and even if you don't consider yourself a beach-bum, you'll be gauranteed an amazing time.
Spend your nights in the campervan at Sol Scape falling asleep to the sound of waves crashing over rocks off in the distance, native birds dancing in the trees above you and the haunting sound of the Ruru/Morepork (a native New Zealand owl). Solscape is easily one of New Zealands most beautiful camp grounds, with excellent facilities, lots of walks and a short distance to the beaches.
Start your day by watching the sunrise over the west coast at Ngarunui Beach Lookout or Manu Bay. Pack a picnic breakfast or just sit and soak in the incredible views. Follow it up with an early morning swim in summer or a lazy stroll along the beach.
Back in the town centre, a delicious brunch (or lunch) at 'The Shack' is a must to fuel a day of activities. Wander around the town centre and pick up some local art from one of the many art galleries or one of the many other locally owned stores.
Arrive back at the camp grounds for an afternoon yoga session or massage with a sensational view over the bay, or learn to surf at one of the many classes on offer. Wander down to Manu Bay and while away the afternoon playing in the surf, lazing in the sun and watching surfers and paddle boarders. Explore the rock pools around the coast line and head back up to Sol Scape for an amazing dinner looking over the bay as you watch the sun sink into the ocean... The best bit? If you don't feel like cooking, the Sol Scape café cooks a divine meal using all local ingredients from their own garden.
There's also lots of day trips to take from Raglan, Check out Bridal Veil Falls, go hiking, visit the windmill farm, stroll along the arts trail, or go to the art markets on the first Sunday of the month. Venture a little further and go on an underground adventure at the Waitomo Glow Worm Caves! There's bound to be something here for everyone.
